Plain answers to the questions organisations and doctors ask most.
Read all FAQsA Responsible Officer is a senior doctor appointed by a designated body to fulfil statutory duties under the Responsible Officers Regulations 2010. They oversee the appraisal and revalidation of connected doctors and monitor their professional conduct and performance.
Any healthcare organisation that employs or contracts doctors—including single-doctor practices, clinics and hospitals—can become a designated body, enabling it to support its connected doctors with appraisal and revalidation.
Not necessarily. However, becoming a designated body enables your organisation to provide appraisal and revalidation support for its doctors. As appraisal and revalidation are statutory requirements for doctors practising in the UK, becoming a designated body enables your organisation to support its doctors in meeting these requirements.
Revalidation is a process, carried out every five years, through which licensed doctors demonstrate that they remain up to date and fit to practise. It is based on a review of appraisal evidence, supporting information and clinical governance data. The doctor's Responsible Officer uses this information to make a recommendation to the General Medical Council.
